<span style="font-size: medium;">Time is flying by and another month has cruised past me. During the month of May a small group of us have been meeting at a friend’s house to play with all manner of textile things. Fabric painting, stamping and making our own cord among other things.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-0VMoxkk7u10/UbmWfEnoXwI/AAAAAAAADhE/NMDHXhVNCoI/s1600-h/015%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="015" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-gLrwnxtMnz0/UbmWfzbakYI/AAAAAAAADhM/_c7TG_28Sn8/015_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="015" width="244" /></a><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-cl81ko3NXj8/UbmWhubeIAI/AAAAAAAADhU/vOPcJNZYNPg/s1600-h/016%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="016" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Ii_qN0hx2RM/UbmWiRgmLZI/AAAAAAAADhc/u8lUDKZP9Dg/016_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="016" width="244" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-gCy58WN3sSA/UbmWmGz3ajI/AAAAAAAADhk/dDmZY8ZsUqM/s1600-h/017%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="017" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-QkTMo7V-enM/UbmWm6qo8mI/AAAAAAAADhs/V21GPXl5R4w/017_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="017" width="244" /></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-w79Ls3aRykw/UbmWo7Rq3EI/AAAAAAAADh0/svRKXY2H2pg/s1600-h/018%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="018" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-h_l79bDGC6A/UbmWplH5RGI/AAAAAAAADh8/uZew0dzIF9g/018_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="018" width="244" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Here is Linda showing us some of her creations and explaining what we can do with our fabric paints.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">The following technique is done with a wire rack. </span><br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-BXbuagLGjI0/UbmWshwpbvI/AAAAAAAADiE/uY4hN1GksHA/s1600-h/020%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="020" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-DYayTB0Q9oA/UbmWtUUyv0I/AAAAAAAADiM/Ncn72dcBrHs/020_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="020" width="244" /></a><br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-TywtmapYapA/UbmWwrFQLCI/AAAAAAAADiU/BEH76qyJxK4/s1600-h/021%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="021" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XvSU3Rfpsuo/UbmWxcJV5dI/AAAAAAAADic/4EmL0tj1H8I/021_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="021" width="244" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Starting in the middle, poke your fabric through the holes using the end of a paintbrush.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">We then did a sun print. Firstly we painted the fabric with fabric paint, laid out our objects ( we used bracken fern leaves ) and then laid the pieces out in the sun to dry.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">This is my finished sun print. (In between the leaves I sprinkled some lentils). Very happy with it.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">++++++++++++++++++++</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Now for a long overdue finish!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Last year we did a thread sandwich at art quilting with Linda Wrench. It is just a matter of cutting up all little pieces of fabric, ribbon, braid, thread etc etc and laying it out on a base. Then we covered this with water soluble stabilizer and free motioned quilted all over it. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">I made this little green box with mine. It is a pattern from a Stitch magazine and was quite easy to make up. I embellished the piece with a little bit of bling and made the cord with Linda a few weeks ago using wool and thread I had in the stash.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">We are about to go away on another trip to the bush, but I hope to post more of what I have been up to over the past few weeks in the coming days. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">It is a busy time trying to pack and get organized for a big trip, but I still managed to start yet another quilt this week. This one is for our daughter’s partner and I am doing some hand embroidery on it, so I just wanted to get it to a point where I can take it with us and perhaps do some on the trip. Also, I am on a time line – it has to be finished by early next year for his birthday!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Ciao, Dianne.</span>Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04950779045248041264noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896588278531604818.post-46318968365305524092013-05-04T10:54:00.001+10:002013-06-13T20:08:13.058+10:00Starts & Finishes<span style="font-size: small;">This past week has seen both finishes and starts – well, quite a few starts actually. More starts than finishes, definitely, but they won’t all be shown here. Firstly, I finished the small community cuddle quilt for the local hospital co-ordinated by Toowoomba Quilters club.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-AY7xAIi9Uyo/UYRbCbVoaWI/AAAAAAAADeE/pw87VJ8bDC4/s1600-h/04.13%252520Cuddle%252520Quilt%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="04.13 Cuddle Quilt" border="0" height="302" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-8Pnr-jqO0FE/UYRbDDd5PMI/AAAAAAAADeM/y-6GCQ0a6sI/04.13%252520Cuddle%252520Quilt_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="04.13 Cuddle Quilt" width="257" /></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Qu8o4mDA47w/UYRbFzdg07I/AAAAAAAADeU/X8ennMyiVxM/s1600-h/04.13%252520echo%252520quilting%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="04.13 echo quilting" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-t_163NCAz_o/UYRbGtS0iFI/AAAAAAAADec/HxLwBwlCpYg/04.13%252520echo%252520quilting_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="04.13 echo quilting" width="244" /></a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I have always wanted to do ‘echo quilting’, so I went around each heart about 1/2’ away. It looked good, but I think it made the little quilt a bit stiff and I could have spaced the quilting a bit wider . It is 24” x 24” finished.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Next finish was done because there was a time frame. I seem to work better when I have to have something finished by a certain time!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">“The Uh-Oh Bra” is a take off of “The Ahhh Bra” which is advertised as being the best u-beaut bra on the market. Well this poor ol’ one has seen better days. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I painted it purple which was the theme for the “Cuppa for Cancer” fund raiser at Toowoomba Quilters this year. You can read all about the great day we had and all the decorated bras <a href="http://www.toowoombaquiltersclub.blogspot.com/"><span style="color: #9b00d3;">HERE.</span></a> I used Dye na Flow fabric paint and then went to town to destroy it. Hitting it with the heat gun almost set it on fire and I thought I was back in the 60’s woman’s lib movement burning bras. It caught on fire and was quickly put out. I then put the heat gun away and got out the scissors.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Our Art Quilt Group is doing portraits at the moment and I decided on a self portrait. Scary……</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://stitchesandlife.blogspot.com.au/"><span style="color: #9b00d3;">Shirley</span></a> manipulated the photo for me on Gimp and I have traced off the outline.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The plan is to free motion quilt it from the back through the drawing. Free motion quilting is my nemesis. I have watched all the you-tubes, plenty of DVD’s (which sent me to sleep), and read all the hints and tips I can, but still I seem to be hopeless at free motion. Oh, I have also done a workshop!! I know, we are supposed to practice and that is what I am doing at the present time before embarking on the portrait.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">But…. all I seem to do is a mess with it. My attempts are far too ugly to be showing here on the blog. Will keep practising.</span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-size: small;">WIP – Another collage journal cover started. This time I wanted to experiment with image transfer and chose the gel medium method. After a lot of messing around and a lot of You Tube videos watched (latest addiction), </span><span style="font-size: small;"> I ended up with this</span><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-1wjuyH5p0mw/UYRbdinD03I/AAAAAAAADgI/ZPh72lbxlLA/s1600-h/027%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="027" border="0" height="269" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-dVUA2S0cq6M/UYRcQmRP-0I/AAAAAAAADgU/BkoEc6f6Iww/027_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="027" width="324" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The image didn’t come out very strongly, but I kind of like the ethereal look of it and it’s ragged little edges. Lots more fun to be had with this yet.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Gotta run now and practice my free motion!!</span><br />

It is drummed into us. Still we sometimes become complacent. Which is what happened to us. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Since we have got back from our trip to the south several things have gone awry. One of them was that we lost all our business data going back to last financial year (June 2012). I guess we weren’t too worried about our computer crashing as it was only a couple of years old. AHem. They don’t make ‘em like they used to apparently. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">So, my friends, I have been busy trying to get back on track and waiting around for technicians to see if they could retrieve anything. They retrieved some, but not a lot. Now we have a new computer and it is a matter of re-entering as much as we can. Nearly there……</span><br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-adyoZvUxZzU/UXRgum_NljI/AAAAAAAADb4/aJG-Sc5_2YY/s1600-h/Dimboola%252520Kooka%252520on%252520TLander%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Dimboola Kooka on TLander" border="0" height="284" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-tGt4-N5FKZg/UXRgviR0SvI/AAAAAAAADcA/4lzZ8sHs4zg/Dimboola%252520Kooka%252520on%252520TLander_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Dimboola Kooka on TLander" width="307" /></a><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-wYl20F-Zg-8/UXRg0JSxL-I/AAAAAAAADcI/HkL4vcX9v0Q/s1600-h/Dimboola%252520Wimmera%252520R%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Dimboola Wimmera R" border="0" height="278" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-bldvm7gh3m8/UXRg1fcqbWI/AAAAAAAADcQ/UQz8eKmD2co/Dimboola%252520Wimmera%252520R_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Dimboola Wimmera R" width="338" /></a><br />
(Some soothing photos!!!)<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">In between the madness and mayhem I have been doing a little crafting and surfing of the net. My latest addiction being ‘You Tube”. It is so amazing what you can see being done on ‘You Tube’ !!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">One thing I have been watching is very talented people art journaling. So I thought I would like to do some pages and make a little booklet. Then I had the bright idea of covering it and giving it to a friend who just turned 70.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-y3zxnbo-OG8/UXRg3KjzeJI/AAAAAAAADcY/WuLZAlsyEdk/s1600-h/Messy%252520Table%252520Apr%25252013%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Messy Table Apr 13" border="0" height="405" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-_b_yivHG3CY/UXRg4XA5CVI/AAAAAAAADcg/Zwm5XiGWIH0/Messy%252520Table%252520Apr%25252013_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Messy Table Apr 13" width="378" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">My messy dining room table. Oh how I would love to have another space just for fiddling around with art stuff. No more room left in this house!!</span><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-WYL5PZKYYho/UXRg8Ib5mmI/AAAAAAAADco/MlfgfabLFQA/s1600-h/journal%252520cover%252520linda%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img alt="journal cover linda" border="0" height="390" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Q9r0M97E3u4/UXRg9NO-7ZI/AAAAAAAADcw/bFtEPknsoGE/journal%252520cover%252520linda_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="journal cover linda" width="428" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Linda’s journal cover (opened out). I am loving doing some fabric collage at the moment and I think hand stitching makes it look very unique. It was fun to practice going around the flowers and doing the embellishment on them with the free motion. Gotta do more of that!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">The magazine page which inspired the journal cover</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">The little journal inside. I used pamphlet stitch to sew it all together. It was easy peasy and such fun to make.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Another friend is turning 50 soon. Yvonne, if you are reading this log out now!!!!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">She is having a blue and red quilting party on Thursday so I made her this collage card to go with her blue and red fabrics I have got for her.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Last week Toowoomba’s annual show was held and we went along with our daughter and little grandy, Lilian.</span><br />

<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-_lODP627TTQ/UVT9hzsyQ2I/AAAAAAAADW0/nk9xSwy-5mE/s1600-h/GOR%252520Bay%252520of%252520Islands%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="GOR Bay of Islands" border="0" height="324" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-jJGFzO3V9JI/UVT9i9RV8YI/AAAAAAAADW8/V39E_V8tAno/GOR%252520Bay%252520of%252520Islands_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="GOR Bay of Islands" width="425" /></a> (Bay of Islands)<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Since we have got home and got back into it we have had nothing but misfortune with technology grrr1!!@##@ Firstly our main computer bit the dust (had to buy a new one), then Telstra decided to cut the phone service in our area for 22 hours with no warning (no internet). After this it just kept happening. We thought our router was broken when we lost the internet the very next day. No… our server was off the air for 24 hours. Then…..there is more…. our electricity supply was cut for a whole day. Still we have not been able to get hold of a technician to retrieve our files and set us up properly on the new computer. Will try again after Easter. Just gonna chill out now.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">What can a girl do when the electricity gets cut. Answer – not much. She did manage to paint and play around with some up coming journal pages. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">On a brighter note, here are some pictures of the magnificent coast line of the Great Ocean Road. Our trip was magical and my 5 star sister announced after about 10 days that she ‘loved camping’!! Very funny, but good in that we can now organize another trip with my sister and b-i-l for the future.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">As soon as the power came back on Wednesday afternoon, I got to and sewed up this little Easter bag I had cut out. It is for Lilian and we will give it to her Sunday morning with some little goodies inside. This will be a one off as it was very fiddly diddly. A very cute pattern by ‘Melly and me” designs and the pattern is just the size of a postcard which has all the details and pattern pieces inside.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Does anyone else suffer with ‘stumbling at the finishing line’ syndrome? It seems that when I am on the last leg of a project and just want to get it done before any more distractions come my way, all manner of things go wrong!!! Finally I got the fiddly part of the top of this bag done, but don’t look close – Don’t, I said!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Our garden has managed to survive in our absence due to the massive amount of rain Toowoomba had.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">One of the loveliest flowers we have in the garden at this time of year is this deep red dahlia. It never disappoints.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Down in the back yard (where I rarely go these days) my husband discovered this tree flowering. We don’t know what it is but it is so pretty and unusual.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">I am not a zoo person, so when I see our native animals in the wild I get very excited. We were lucky enough to see heaps of koalas in the Otway NP (Victoria). One might say they are <u>far </u>from extinct in this particular area.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">We didn’t see them til early in the morning and they were all asleep. Even so, doesn’t this sleeping koala look the cutest?? He has his little arms crossed awwww.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">What have I been doing? Not much, but I seem to busy all the time.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Piecing is not my forte at all but I did this Jewel Box Block for a secret project. The recipient doesn’t have a blog or read blogs so I am pretty safe to show it here. She is 70 years old in April.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">The background is a tone on tone black and we were to use jewel colours in batik or similar. It was a fun block to make and should look stunning when all the blocks are together.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This past Monday I celebrated another birthday. Wish they would stop coming around so darned quickly. Anyway, we can’t stop them, so we may as well enjoy them. I had a lovely day with my friends doing coffee and then lunch with Shirley, followed by some retail therapy.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Tomorrow we are off on another adventure in the company of my sister and her husband. We are going in our camper and my sister and hubby are tenting it. They haven’t camped since about 1970 when they were just teenagers.LOL this is going to be really funny. My sister is a 5 star girl normally. (She is looking a bit worried here LOL)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It should be loads of fun. Back in about 4 weeks. Ciao.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">My dear brother-in-law decided to choose the long weekend in January to take us on a road trip!! We travelled west to Barcaldine and then we were meant to go east to Emerald and pick up some work equipment for my BIL and continue east and south to home. Ahem…. no one counted on the rain that was going to deluge the east coast and throw our plans into disarray. The upshot is we ended up spending an extra 4 nights in Roma while waiting for the creek to go down in Chinchilla which was cutting the main highway to Toowoomba. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">We are lucky!! Only our plans were changed – this cyclone Oswald has changed some people’s lives forever. Our hearts go out to all those people who have lost everything. Sadly, there have been some lives lost as well. After the events of 2010/2011, and now this, it is going to be a long way back for some areas of Queensland.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Mat-AES8FT4/URQRqcqz3aI/AAAAAAAADR8/4rUPZH3iF9E/s1600-h/DSCN02946.jpg"><img alt="DSCN0294" border="0" height="315" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fNnnxm_T1x0/URQRr6_BiaI/AAAAAAAADSE/vT9Egt4Yolo/DSCN0294_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="DSCN0294" width="351" /></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-eAoRuOA63oY/URQRvbMqUNI/AAAAAAAADSM/HOxCZhBmOOw/s1600-h/DSCN02955.jpg"><img alt="DSCN0295" border="0" height="320" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ky5iLTJJAHQ/URQRw877cvI/AAAAAAAADSU/_IVjzxR7M3I/DSCN0295_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="DSCN0295" width="323" /></a><br />
(Historic pubs in Roma)<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I was also able to revisit the Ace Drapery shop in Roma (three times). A small purchase was made when the man found the DMC No 8 threads in amongst all the other rubble. </span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-tiyU3kINlcI/URQRz2WXwKI/AAAAAAAADSg/we3U0TALYoM/s1600-h/Ace-Drapery-Perle-Cotton5.jpg"><img alt="Ace Drapery Perle Cotton" border="0" height="332" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-y2zz858Gkak/URQR1BFje5I/AAAAAAAADSo/Mnd3UYkcllg/Ace-Drapery-Perle-Cotton_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Ace Drapery Perle Cotton" width="374" /></a>T<br />
Sorry about the blurry photo. This aisle is now fully blocked with stuff. (Photo taken in 2011) The DMC was in another aisle) The shop has got worse in regards to disorder. The poor man needs help!!<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Before I left, I was powering along with a bit of arty stuff and sewing. Since coming back I have been all out of whack, but just so thankful we have all our possessions unlike some people in the north where whole houses were just washed away.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">I saw some ‘fabric paper’ on <a href="http://fat-quarter.blogspot.com/"><u>Annet’s Fat Quarter blog</u></a> which she got from Barbara’s site </span><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="http://www.joggles.com/fabricpaper.htm"><u>here,</u></a> </span><span style="font-size: medium;">and thought I would try some and show our art quilt group how it was done. Here is my effort.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">Yes, there are wrinkles and one broken area, but I like the texture. I used dye na flow fabric paints for the colouring but you could use watered down acrylics. Now it can be cut up to use in projects or embellished further with stamping, stencilling, stitching, or anything your heart desires. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">The <a href="http://www.toowoombaquiltersclub.blogspot.com/"><u>Toowoomba Quilters</u></a> are holding an Open Day on Saturday 16 February and they put forward a challenge. It was a table runner using two fabrics which were chosen for you to use, and you could add others of your own.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">I had been wanting to make a table runner using some Australian Botanical fabrics I purchased some time back. When I got the compulsory fabrics only one of them looked remotely like blending in. The other one was, well…. ugly.<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-CZkL73sg1X4/URQSGddu4OI/AAAAAAAADTg/vVhUuvUOxm0/s1600-h/0023.jpg"><img alt="002" border="0" height="184" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-uv2m-kVZieg/URQSHpWCNzI/AAAAAAAADTo/vUgdkVLSF7c/002_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="002" width="244" /></a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">This is the ugly piece (furnishing fabric) after a little tea dyeing. Then I got stuck into it with a gold shiva stick and paints. It eventually blended in and I used it only in the binding.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">Handmade tassels were a requirement of the challenge. Thank you to <a href="http://stitchesandlife.blogspot.com.au/">Shirley</a> who coached me on the tassels. They have a glittering gold hood. I used a red botanical for the backing and labelled it with a piece of the back of the ugly one “Runna Botanica”.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">The challenge runners will be on display at open day and a small cash prize will be presented to the one with the most viewer votes.</span>Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04950779045248041264noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896588278531604818.post-12461135080801160712013-01-15T12:20:00.001+10:002013-06-13T20:13:47.684+10:00Joys in Life<span style="font-size: small;">It has been so darned hot this past week it has been difficult to think about picking up sewing. Soon I will have air conditioning in the sewing room so that will help in summer. My sewing room is on the western side of the house so is very very hot in summer. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Some of the joys of summer though are extra day light and blooms in the garden.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Our agapanthus are still putting on a nice display and they are such a glorious colour.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-3AlUpONJ-PE/UPS8K53hbrI/AAAAAAAADOw/AeTUClxNqh0/s1600-h/Aggy%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Aggy" border="0" height="281" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-gVOCKKMn6QA/UPS8Mz6FP7I/AAAAAAAADO4/WlgHHCowTck/Aggy_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Aggy" width="352" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-NQhSuFVLRWw/UPS8Qjo-qyI/AAAAAAAADPA/fZM0LyxEFCI/s1600-h/Agapanthus%252520close%252520up%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Agapanthus close up" border="0" height="281" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0q0oniSaELo/UPS8SFns0sI/AAAAAAAADPI/RKV6CnMB1C0/Agapanthus%252520close%252520up_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Agapanthus close up" width="332" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Here are some other things still blooming regardless of the heat wave.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Hubby has started up a vegie garden again now that he has a bit more time on his hands. We have beetroot growing and that will be a joy to eat. We enjoy it just grated raw onto a salad, but also love it pickled.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">We also have lettuce, zucchini, cucumber and tomatoes growing.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The biggest joy in our life at the moment is our little grandie, Lilian. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Lilian loves to paint and draw. Here is a bird she drew and I think it is fantastic for a little girl who has just turned 4.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Isn’t it wonderful? It has a beak and eyes and wings and even a crest. Perhaps she is going to be artistic and crafty – I would love that!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Here she is in her fave dress at the moment, her ‘ballerina dress’. She has always had a cheesecloth wrap with her at bedtime and when she needs it for comfort. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> She calls it ‘sooky’. Sooky goes everywhere!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Goals – not necessarily all this year!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">1…… Finish at least a couple of UFO’s</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">2……Take a Learn to Draw Class</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">3……Get all my TAST stitches done</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">4……Let go of the fear and let the creative side take over</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">and some Bad Habits that need to be broken-</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">There is one bad habit I have conquered last year. Since I was a small girl I have always chewed my fingernails. I know, yuk, yuk yuk! Gross! As a child I was very shy and very self conscious about my very thick glasses. Of course it didn’t help that I was teased mercilessly by the other kids at school. This made me very nervy and I just chewed and chewed. Fifty odd (very odd) years later on our Western trip last year, I found that my fingernails grew because I wasn’t chewing!! You are always dirty when you’re camping out in the bush, so even I couldn’t bring myself to chew. So….. haven’t chewed since. HURRAY!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">1……Stop starting new projects before finishing old</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">2……Stop hoarding and buying art stuff that goes into the cupboard to just dream about</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">3……Stop getting on this bloody computer so often and make some limits.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Well, there you have it, I have exposed publicly.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">My friend, Marleen, gave me this journal for Christmas. Inside it has a type of recycled paper and some of the pages in the back are graph paper. This should be really handy for doing some designing. I love it!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">So, I am designating this book to creative ideas. Thank you, Marleen.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">One of my loopy sister in laws (sorry Cath, but you know you are : -)) has a beautiful Australian chocolate mist cat called Levi. In amongst all her old clothing was this very 80’s, very ugly denim skirt. I suggested we cut it up and make a little snuggle rug for Levi. Something he can scratch the billyo out of if he likes! It is backed with the black velvety ‘stuff’ you see here in the windows of the front. Cathy loved it hope Levi does too!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Forgot to take an after cooking photo but it was quite spectacular!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Also made a new dessert which everyone agrees will become a family tradition.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It is from the pre Christmas edition of “Delicious” magazine. Cold Rice Pudding with Hot Cherry Sauce. Out of this wooooorld.</span><br />

It is lovely to be spending some time just relaxing at home over the Christmas New Year break. <span style="font-size: small;">I made Marleen and Joan one of these pencil rolls each. The pattern was from ‘You Go Girl’ – <a href="http://http//yougogirl.typepad.com/you_go_girl/2009/02/guess-what-today-is-no-its-not-my-birthday-nope-not-my-anniversary-groundhog-day-has-passed-and-valentines-isnt-yet-here.html"><span style="color: blue;">HERE</span></a>- and was very easy to put together with easy to understand instructions. </span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zNVKcbc7O1Y/UN-O5H2ThFI/AAAAAAAADJI/QNhRtNQF5Tc/s1600-h/My%252520Little%252520owls%25252011.12%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="My Little owls 11.12" border="0" height="234" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-9E_VsQ77JmY/UN-O6q_pubI/AAAAAAAADJQ/EZTRssubiIA/My%252520Little%252520owls%25252011.12_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="My Little owls 11.12" width="326" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">And I made them each a little owl too such as I had received earlier from Vicki at the retreat.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Finally, I have done some more TAST stitching.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This one is Week 21 – Butterfly Chain. I have called this little one ‘Butterfly Love’ and designed it when we were out in the outback in August. This stitch was very interesting and I like it done in the chain like I have used around the hearts. I have worked it on duponi silk.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Nz0dN_k2U3Y/UN-O_EseocI/AAAAAAAADJY/3LSzrtD1Lok/s1600-h/Wk%25252021%252520Butterfly%252520Chain%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Wk 21 Butterfly Chain" border="0" height="260" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-5qS-lCE6Lx4/UN-PAxANFTI/AAAAAAAADJg/kj_9MvbRzT4/Wk%25252021%252520Butterfly%252520Chain_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Wk 21 Butterfly Chain" width="346" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Yesterday I watched movies and stitched Week 22 – Knotted Cretan Stitch. This one is called ‘Fish Skeleton’ and evolved from just ‘freestyling’ with the stitch. On the border I have done it in a very controlled manner in a knotted open cretan and I love the texture this stitch creates.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-yPow5E1Sx_k/UN-PFFp750I/AAAAAAAADJo/La9QPhezSA8/s1600-h/Wk%25252022%252520Knotted%252520Cretan%252520Stitch%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Wk 22 Knotted Cretan Stitch" border="0" height="263" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-uHFbfLM8NXI/UN-PG_1SDZI/AAAAAAAADJs/qWQM05wWSWc/Wk%25252022%252520Knotted%252520Cretan%252520Stitch_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Wk 22 Knotted Cretan Stitch" width="349" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The background is hand painted (by me) in acrylic paint mixed with textile medium and then rubbed with a copper coloured shiva stik over a textured surface. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">All the TAST stitches for 2012 may be viewed <a href="http://pintangle.com/tast-faq/"><span style="color: blue;">HERE</span></a> and in the comments sections of each stitch you can view what other people have done over the year. There are some very creative ideas for using all the various stitches.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Thank you to Sharon Boggon from “<a href="http://pintangle.com/"><span style="color: blue;">Pintangle</span></a><span style="color: blue;">”</span> for organizing the TAST challenge. </span><br />

<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-J35PUDXHHB8/UMgvfuXqL4I/AAAAAAAAC9g/OA21fX-nfX4/s1600-h/Magazine-mayhem5.jpg"><img alt="Magazine mayhem" border="0" height="431" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Uflkh5HoO-s/UMgvhXf-piI/AAAAAAAAC9o/oO7lD-ZcZsE/Magazine-mayhem_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Magazine mayhem" width="534" /></a><br />
(Pile of magazines needing culling)<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Life seems to overwhelm me sometimes and the clutter around me doesn’t make me feel any better.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ykGTvdkK3Cc/UMgvjWURgXI/AAAAAAAAC9w/76AJFY3np98/s1600-h/0039.jpg"><img alt="003" border="0" height="553" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-lMAoJqdHTOY/UMgvlEVizyI/AAAAAAAAC94/IouF4-eZel8/003_thumb6.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="003" width="535" /></a><br />
(Where to start?? – June 2011) – (Love the look)<br />

(Scrap box before)<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This year, I believe, I achieved a lot in the organisation department. Thanks to my friend, Shirley, we got into the sewing room where she introduced me to the plastic box. Not that I didn’t know about them, I just didn’t know where to start with the sorting. She had some great ideas and I am still working on amalgamating all of the stuff into their respective categories.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ANuyN0B9mXM/UMgvrWtTtKI/AAAAAAAAC-Q/iJW0OxeuIBs/s1600-h/0019.jpg"><img alt="001" border="0" height="615" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-L9pVzdTcmZs/UMgvtQJlquI/AAAAAAAAC-Y/wImk1aEl2_w/001_thumb6.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="001" width="518" /></a><br />

(Some progress)<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Each year I start with the idea of disposing of an item a day and this has worked very well. It usually fizzles out, so I have kicked it off again – right now! I have discovered this website “The Organised Housekeeper” and she has the de-cluttering 52 week challenge right </span><a href="http://theorganisedhousewife.com.au/declutter-52-things-in-52-weeks-challenge/"><span style="color: blue; font-size: small;">HERE</span></a><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;">,</span> which I am gong to attempt to follow. (Hope it goes better than the TAST challenge LOL). Of course, we have planned trips once again for 2013, so I will have to double up some weeks to achieve the goal.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-omYoeKwmJCU/UMgvz3V4pBI/AAAAAAAAC-w/Ysk600zKNAA/s1600-h/Oval-Emb-Pincushions4.jpg"><img alt="Oval Emb Pincushions" border="0" height="417" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Dgz-MZt5QEY/UMgv1hTB6PI/AAAAAAAAC-4/iEX1kBYdh7A/Oval-Emb-Pincushions_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Oval Emb Pincushions" width="595" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">During the past couple of years I have made some of these embroidered felt pin cushions which I was going to sell at our exhibition. When I showed a friend, she bought the lot and I didn’t get around to making any more. Shirley has gifted me some of her embroidery wool ‘double ups’ and I have made a few more since, and intend to make some more. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Shirley and I met our online friend, Linda from </span><a href="http://billabongs2bling.blogspot.com.au/"><span style="color: blue; font-size: small;"><i>Billabongs 2 Bling</i></span></a><span style="font-size: small;"> at the Bush Christmas a week or so ago.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It was lovely to catch up with Linda and finally get to meet her. Bush Christmas is when the bush crafters come to town and sell their wares. It was really beautiful with lots of delicious things to look at.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">I don’t think I have ever shown this piece of loveliness before. It was a special gift from Shirley some years ago, and it hangs from the knob of my little sewing table in the lounge room for all to admire.</span><br />

I<span style="font-size: small;"> made this sewing dilly bag for a friend who has left Toowoomba to go and live on Flinders Island, Tasmania.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">She has always admired my dilly bag like this, so now she has her very own. I think it is a pattern from ‘Country Pieces’. It is a pattern I have had for many, many years.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">There are some other things I have been making which can’t be shown here just yet. I have very much enjoyed working on some collage cards which I will show in the next week or so.</span><br />

The reason we are unsure is that this particular tree hasn’t flowered to our knowledge. <span style="font-size: small;">Well, we weren’t really at Del Prado, Spain, we were visiting the “Masterpieces from the Prado” exhibition in Brisbane!!</span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-moaxtKhYIBg/UIx50613WpI/AAAAAAAAC40/TloGhLuL2Es/s1600-h/007%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="007" border="0" height="246" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Mdcq3qr_ybI/UIx52GWBkRI/AAAAAAAAC48/c71GjAEK64o/007_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="007" width="297" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It was last Sunday, and we enjoyed a full day out at the Art Gallery. The exhibition was mind blowing. The detail in most of the portraits was very realistic as were the still life paintings. The paintings of the costumes on people depicting lace, velvet, brocades etc were extraordinary. You could almost feel the fabric. (No photography allowed)</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">After a bit of a hiccup I made it to our annual retreat for Toowoomba Quilters Club. </span><br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-TA0WrzR8URg/UIHLG3TjUhI/AAAAAAAAC3A/Z98D2kyWTRA/s1600-h/Di%25252C%252520Vicki%25252C%252520Marleen%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Di, Vicki, Marleen" border="0" height="265" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-5ZFC4mYfNoM/UIHLJBfOVZI/AAAAAAAAC3E/qaem9d2ua4w/Di%25252C%252520Vicki%25252C%252520Marleen_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Di, Vicki, Marleen" width="335" /></a><br />
Me, Vicky and Marleen.<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It starts on the Friday afternoon around 4.30 but yours truly was in bed all day Friday after just recovering from a vomiting bug during Thursday night, quickly followed up by a migraine. Yukko.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Not to be beaten, I thought I would get up really early Saturday morning and head out to the retreat. it was not to be. Still had the migraine at 5.00am so went back to bed and nursed it til around 9.00. Then I was well enough to go – can’t keep a determined quilter down!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Alas, the sewing planned did not get done, but I did do a little bit of wool embroidery and a little bit of zentangle to keep my mind off the fact that I was still nauseous and unwell.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">At retreat we had a Christmas swap at Saturday lunch and I was lucky enough to win these very cute owls made by Vicki W. They kept going missing over the next 24 hours and I would find them scattered randomly about the room. <img alt="Smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-stwe4Jo9Htk/UIHLKjl2KQI/AAAAAAAAC3M/DP9ArqsoGe0/wlEmoticon-smile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /></span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Aren’t they just sooooo cute. Mamma and her three babies.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">On Wednesday our quilt group took a bus down to Brisbane to Quilt and Craft Show. It was a hoot (sorry for the pun).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It was one of the best organized trips I have ever been on with our quilt club. Organized by the beautiful Ineke, we had a pit stop at Goodna where we had a lovely cup of tea/coffee and cake and bikkies and then on to the show. Our tickets and other information was already attended to and we walked straight in and spent a wonderful day exploring the show.</span><span style="font-size: small;">Here are just some of the goodies I bought.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-8VHNuS0VOvA/UIHLRLzBnjI/AAAAAAAAC3o/QXH2YULgDCA/s1600-h/Purchases%252520quilt%252520show%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Purchases quilt show" border="0" height="350" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-sH0h6tmfm-U/UIHLS6XLy1I/AAAAAAAAC3w/ACaZEi9Ya1A/Purchases%252520quilt%252520show_thumb%25255B12%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Purchases quilt show" width="283" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-il0BHoJOsSA/UIHLWFDPBkI/AAAAAAAAC34/WQUZk5oghyc/s1600-h/Washi%252520Tape%252520etc.%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Washi Tape etc." border="0" height="298" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-i3KYmsVzOyY/UIHLX6FHM5I/AAAAAAAAC4A/tTsXZRA2_jg/Washi%252520Tape%252520etc._thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Washi Tape etc." width="336" /></a><span style="font-size: small;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Some arty farty stuff – coloured lutradur, batik fabric I had to have, colourful sari silk stirps and a rubbing plate. Some washi tape which I don’t know what for, some daisy braid, angelina fibres (also bought a copper shade) and a micron pen for zentangle.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">There was a bit more too, and I spent waaaaay too much but had a lovely day. It was good to catch up with some friends at the show who aren’t in the group, and I even caught up with Mary, a crafting friend, from Rainbow Beach.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The winning quilts at the Queensland Quilt show can be seen </span><a href="http://www.qldquilters.com/quilt_show_2012.php"><span style="color: blue; font-size: small;">here.</span></a><br />
Blogger – The verification on blogger these days is a pest. It is hard for people to read and deters people from commenting, so I turned it off. Alas, now I am being bombarded with spam and silly anonymous emails so I will have to put it back on, sorry. Just wish blogger would make the verification process easier.Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04950779045248041264noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896588278531604818.post-62880416183461840312012-10-10T14:30:00.001+10:002013-06-13T20:20:19.436+10:00Still Here!<br />
My life has been in a bit of a whirlwind since arriving home from our trip to the west.<br />
We went a lot further West than I had anticipated we would, and all in all we travelled some 10,000 kilometres.<br />
Seeing the Indian Ocean for the first time was awesome ,and I must say I am a little bit in love with the State of Western Australia and can’t wait to go back for another visit. There were many, many photos taken and I will attempt to show little bits here and there as time permits. Many contrasts of landscapes.<br />

Since coming home I have had the <a href="http://toowoombaquiltersclub.blogspot.com/"><i><u>Toowoomba Quilters Club Quilt Show</u></i></a> to attend, a trip to the delightful town of Childers to catch up with a cousin, and a quick fling to Brisbane with my adorable sister to see “Jersey Boys”.<br />

Sights of Brisbane (The jacarandas are out in bloom and looking bloomin’ wonderful).<br />
P.S. I had a terrible cough and flu for the trip to Childers and Brisbane and only just recovering after almost 2 weeks!!!<br />
The quilt show was brilliant this year. It just seems to get better and better and the new venue is working out very well. It is such a fun week being able to just hang with my quilting mates and catch up on all the new and exciting things they have been doing. Also good to finally catch up with my dear friend <a href="http://stitchesandlife.blogspot.com.au/">Shirley</a> again (who by all accounts missed me a bit). <br />
Not much sewing done but this weekend is our annual quilt retreat so I am hoping to get a bit done there.<br />
BLOGSPOT – I notice Australian blogspot blogs have had the au added onto the end of their addresses.<br />
I haven’t seen any notification from Blogger about this. ????Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04950779045248041264noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896588278531604818.post-64178941765538623702012-07-30T19:28:00.001+10:002013-06-13T20:21:00.581+10:00Oyster Stitch<span style="font-size: small;">This week the stitch for <b><u><a href="http://pintangle.com/2012/07/24/take-a-stitch-tuesday-week-30-2/#comment-24754">TAST</a> </u></b>was oyster stitch. It is such a versatile and textural stitch, and I loved it. It is like the stitch Robyn Ginn showed me which she calls row of roses. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Here is where I used her row of roses some years ago on my still unfinished crazy patch.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-N8daL87CVn8/UBZTi8Q0I3I/AAAAAAAACzo/CKcGkSr9hWA/s1600-h/The%252520Glenvale%252520Block%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="The Glenvale Block" border="0" height="502" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-1fHn7MM19pQ/UBZTk8nurtI/AAAAAAAACzw/BYvHA6ANSGo/The%252520Glenvale%252520Block_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="The Glenvale Block" width="518" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I have used it on the heart in the middle of the block, and also as buds on the flowering peach tree. The way she showed me was slightly different to the instructions on the Pintangle site. I can’t for the life of me remember her way of doing it now. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This is what I did this time for TAST:</span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-dsVMNfe2Mzw/UBZTnfM78wI/AAAAAAAACz4/AJTgVKEtppY/s1600-h/Hollyhocks%252520and%252520Strawberries%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Hollyhocks and Strawberries" border="0" height="355" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-zUgBirwmVz0/UBZToo1TLrI/AAAAAAAAC0A/PA5PoPP7ZmQ/Hollyhocks%252520and%252520Strawberries_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Hollyhocks and Strawberries" width="521" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It is mostly done in various thicknesses of DMC stranded thread and the border is a No 8 perle cotton. I painted the background which was just a white cotton fabric originally. To put it into perspective, each strawberry is just 5mm or less long.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">You can see some beautiful examples of oyster stitch over <b><u><a href="http://pintangle.com/2012/07/30/tast-week-30-highlights/">here</a> </u></b>on Pintangle.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This past Friday was a very special birthday for my dear quilting friend, Marleen.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">My friend Joan and I put together an album for her using some textile pages made by her quilting friends and some photos of happy times we have spent in Marleen’s company.</span><br />

Purely coincidental. I have called it ‘Ethnic Blouse’. Basque stitch was fun to do and is now a favourite. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">You can see more inspiration on basque stitch over on <a href="http://pintangle.com/2012/07/17/take-a-stitch-tuesday-week-29-2/"><u><b>Pintangle .</b></u></a></span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">I just wanted to do something a little bit different this time and not use the usual inspiration – nature.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Now for a Nana story – My grand daughter and her mummy were playing games before bedtime and were both giggling, when GD, Lilian, ( 3 1/2 years) stopped and looked at her mummy and said</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">“Mummy, you are the right Mummy for me”. Isn’t that just the cutest??</span><br />

CARBOHYDRATE type food!! This is even reflected in my stitching – LOL</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I have done my small sample for TAST Week 28, Up and Down Buttonhole stitch. There is a great yawning gap between the last TAST sample and this one – like- uhhhm – 7 weeks! You might say I am a little bit behind.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Even though I took my stitching with me on our last trip, it is difficult to stitch when travelling to the far away (filthy dirty) places we travel too. One never feels clean enough to handle the stitching. Camping in sand and red dust is just not conducive to it.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-KTwlNgNLzRk/UAzt_D_h_4I/AAAAAAAACyk/dwsRhrtSXbw/s1600-h/Wk%25252028%252520Up%252520%252526%252520Down%252520Buttonhole%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Wk 28 Up & Down Buttonhole" border="0" height="328" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-nRBQMQP6Z8g/UAzuAolA1fI/AAAAAAAACys/ax-V_Zi5MbA/Wk%25252028%252520Up%252520%252526%252520Down%252520Buttonhole_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Wk 28 Up & Down Buttonhole" width="510" /></a><br />
<i>(Felt Donuts)</i><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The circle theme on </span><a href="http://sketchbookchallenge.blogspot.com.au/"><u><b><span style="font-size: small;">Sketchbook Challenge</span></b></u></a><span style="font-size: small;"> was my inspiration for this piece. That border of very close U & D b/hole stitch nearly drove me mad, and I was wondering why I do it to myself???? </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I am really keen on having a go at the next stitch, basque stitch, if I get some time – it looks very interesting.</span><br />

It was quite nerve wracking to begin with, but as proceedings went on we all became more comfortable. It isn’t easy making a quilt for someone else we have discovered!! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Please visit the Toowoomba Quilters blog to see all of the wonderful quilts the ladies created from their bags of stuff. It is amazing<img alt="Open-mouthed smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-GpdKwYceAZQ/UAppcR--7QI/AAAAAAAACx4/ylYoQKvNjZs/wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /> <u>http</u><a href="http://www.toowoombaquiltersclub.blogspot.com/"><u>://www.toowoombaquiltersclub.blogspot.com</u></a></span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Here is the quilt I made with my bag of stuff from Lyn L. I loved the Philip Jacobs leaf prints, so based my quilt around them. The top left corner is woven cheesecloth with a leaf hand embroidered. Below that I couched down some fabric strips (ala <a href="http://judys-journal.blogspot.com.au/"><i><u>Judy Martin)</u></i></a> and these represent Autumn. Thanks to Shirley for guiding me with colours and placements. xxx</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Linda Wrench (no blog) received my bag of stuff and this is the gorgeous quilt I received from her today.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">She has used some chenilling and has painstakingly quilted around those little Kaffe Fassett ‘trees’ in gold thread. Very small cornelli quilting – I am in awe of it. The whole piece is based around the orchard and the ‘fruit’ on the top right is made with little circles of fabric each stitched down with a sequin and bead.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Thank you Linda, I love it very much.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">We had a lovely day at art quilting today!!</span>Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04950779045248041264noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896588278531604818.post-13471276936690075192012-07-20T12:22:00.001+10:002013-06-13T20:24:13.358+10:00Bag of Stuff–A Challenge<span style="font-size: small;">All of those near and dear to me (especially Shirley) will be pleased to know I have put together the challenge quilt from my bag of stuff. I think I was driving everyone crazy with my indecisions and procrastinations!!!! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Our Quilting Art Group put this challenge out around February, and of course, true to form, I have left it until the last minute to finish it off. (I work much better under pressure )<img alt="Steaming mad" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-steamingmad" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-wQkbck7Mvl4/UAjAtOzJ07I/AAAAAAAACxM/omwoX8vg7QI/wlEmoticon-steamingmad%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none;" /> I did start on some of the elements before we went away in May, thankfully.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Tomorrow is the big reveal day. We will see what each person has done with their bag of stuff.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The only rule was to use lots of the contents of your bag of stuff, you were allowed to add your own stuff as well. Keep it to within the parameters of 20” on each side and at the end of the challenge, hand back what is left in the bag plus the recipient's completed quilt.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Here is the bag of stuff I received back in February.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-2ZNfG7vWPyA/UAjAx9PB4YI/AAAAAAAACxU/3D8VWPs0EHo/s1600-h/No.%2525208%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="No. 8" border="0" height="529" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-EiKWmRvnKY0/UAjA04DGdRI/AAAAAAAACxc/d1l-RaXzTKU/No.%2525208_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="No. 8" width="694" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I loved those Philip Jacobs leaf fabrics, so, basically, the quilt I made is around this theme.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">This is our truck with the camper set up. It is a slide on camper called a<i><b> “</b></i></span><a href="http://www.travelander.com.au/"><i><b><span style="font-size: small;">Travelander”</span></b></i></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">It folds down from the back of the truck with a remote control and takes only a few minutes to set up. The bed is made and all. The only thing left to do is get out the chairs and tables (which are stored on the bed for travelling) and relax!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">This is the kitchen which folds down from the rear of the vehicle. Fridge on the far left, pantry in the middle and the fold out arm contains the gas 3 ring cooker and sink. It is so cool!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I have so many photos of the tropics and our travels, but I wouldn’t want to bore you with them. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">We had such a wonderful time. Now my DH would like to pack up again in a couple of weeks and head west to warmer climes.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Soooooo, no time for stitching lately and I am very, very behind with my TAST. I have just been enjoying looking at all the wonderful examples everyone else is doing.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Also, I have some very pressing deadlines to meet for the art quilt group and other secret women’s business to attend to before end of July. YIKES.</span><br />

I love doing bullions but all I could come up with was flowers.<br />
This is it – A Bullion Garden<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-VIDgwIhNKnI/T7zJ9kB7VAI/AAAAAAAACvY/MiExuOZJdiA/s1600-h/A%252520Bullion%252520Garden%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="A Bullion Garden" border="0" height="291" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-nv91DUDQJfs/T7zJ_BKLR8I/AAAAAAAACvg/emenlYHoYbE/A%252520Bullion%252520Garden_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="A Bullion Garden" width="419" /></a><br />
Thank you to <a href="http://stitchesandlife.blogspot.com/">Shirley</a> who reminded me about twisted silk ribbon and who told me about the border stitch, detached bullion. I started off a bit wobbly with it but got better as I got around the border. I love this stitch and will definitely use it again some time. <br />
Au revoir for now, there may be a short break in transmission as Hubby and I head off on an adventure into the bush.<br />
Internet connection may be non – existent where we are going but if by any chance I get some more TAST stitching done and I have connection I will post it up.<br />
Pop over to Sharon b’s site <a href="http://www.pintangle.com/">www.pintangle.com</a> and see all the other amazing bullion pieces.Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04950779045248041264noreply@blogger.com10
